Support PHP 8.2 illustrated by a missing puzzle

This month we ship only patch releases which do mainly improve PHP 8.2 compatibility. Our extensions do already run smooth with the PHP 8.x series but deprecated messages, which are not visible on production sites, are now fully handled in the latest version of PHP.

Continuing our proven release strategy, as it is the fourth Thursday in month, we deliver some new versions for DPMedia, DPCalendar, DPAttachments and DPCases. The following new patch releases are published today for you:

The next chapters do highlight some of the most important changes.

PHP 8.2 support

Our extensions are supporting PHP versions down to version 7.4 without any issue. The newest feature versions from PHP do introduce always new deprecation's (which is normal, Joomla does the same). This allows the developers to stay up to date with the newest design patterns and technologies. PHP is going towards a modern object oriented language and then it is obvious that old stuff should left behind.

In PHP 8.2 is a new deprecation added which informs developers when they add not defined variables to an object. Is the server in development mode, then does an extension developer see these messages and can fix their code accordingly. This is not dangerous or can cause an error on your production site. But fixing these deprecation's will ensure that the extension is also running then smooth on the next major PHP version 9.0, when the old code will result in a fatal error.

Beside fixing the deprecation messages in our extensions, Allon Moritz which is our main developer, helped to lift the CMS core code to version 8.2. So the next version 4.2.7 of Joomla will also run smooth on PHP 8.2.

PHP 8.2 fixes

Bugfixes

We are eager to improve our extensions on a regular basis. That's why every major/feature release does contain also bug fixes and small enhancements as well to improve the stability and performance.

OUr extensions got this time only bug fixes, that's why they are patch releases. A full changelog is added in the respective download release description for every extension on our download site.

Upgrade considerations

Updating to DPCalendar, DPMedia, DPAttachments and DPCases is straight forward as no layouts are changed which can lead to upgrade issues.

Kind regards
