Joomla 4 celebration

At J and Beyond 2016 we started with Joomla 4 as last attempt after some have failed in the past. Today the stable version is going to be released, let's celebrate it!!

The whole Joomla community was waiting for Joomla 4 since a long time. And now on the 16. birthday of Joomla, the first stable version is going to be released! This makes us from Digital Peak so happy. Some of the highlights of Joomla 4 are:

  • New front and admin template
  • Overhauled media manager
  • Webservices
  • Super fast loading time with 100% Google lighthouse score

We will not write more about the features of Joomla 4 as you can read of it on joomla.org/4 or many other web sites covering them.

How did we help?

Our main developer Allon Moritz joined the core Joomla 4 team in 2017 with some big plans. He namespaced the whole code base and restructured the way how extensions do look like in Joomla 4, checkout this video for more details. The Joomla CMS has now a modern architecture and will attract on the long term new developers with even more professional extensions. He also removed some deprecated code and was the team lead of the new media manager project. Additionally he fixed tons of bugs and assisted George Wilson during some time merging pull requests.

The biggest addition was the service oriented architecture introduction for extensions. There are now modern ways of developing a Joomla 4 extension. If you want to know more about this, watch this interesting video from JAB 18 about the new approach. At the same time it was in our interest to make the transition for J3 extensions as painless as possible, so we kept as much backwards compatibility as possible.

All in all we are very proud to be part of this journey, even when not all went as expected.

How we celebrate?

We wont be one of the much trusted Joomla extension providers when we will not celebrate the biggest milestone in Joomla history with a brand new extension. DPMedia extends the Joomla 4 core media manager with new storage provider plugins for Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, WebDAV (iCloud, Nextcloud), Flickr, FTP, Unsplash, Pexels and Pixabay. Additionally, the package contains some plugins which offer more functionality for editing images. An admin can then draw lines and arrows, insert some text or apply some filters without leaving the Joomla core media manager.

There is also a fully functional free version of it with a reduced amount of plugins. Grab your copy here and get started with a brand new media manager experience on Joomla 4.

Conclusion

Our main extensions, DPCalendar, DPMedia and DPAttachments are already available for Joomla 4 and the others will follow soon. We are also eager to migrate all of our sites to the brand new version Joomla 4 and hope you will enjoy it as much as we do. Stay safe on this special day and have some fun!!

Kind regards
