DPAnalytics is a simple tracking bridge extension which integrates matomo.org into Joomla. Matomo, formerly known as Piwik, is an open-source web analytics platform that provides website owners and administrators with a comprehensive set of tools to track and analyze visitor behavior on their websites. Matomo is an alternative to popular proprietary web analytics services like Google Analytics, and it offers several advantages, including data ownership, privacy control, and customization options. Here are some key features and aspects of Matomo:
Open Source: Matomo is an open-source software, which means its source code is freely available for anyone to view, modify, and distribute. This openness encourages transparency, security, and community collaboration.
Data Ownership and Privacy: One of Matomo's most significant selling points is that it allows website owners to retain full control and ownership of their analytics data. This contrasts with some other analytics platforms that may collect and potentially use data for their own purposes. Matomo helps users comply with data privacy regulations, such as GDPR, by allowing them to host the analytics data on their own servers or a trusted third-party hosting service.
Customization and Flexibility: Matomo is highly customizable and adaptable to specific tracking needs. Users can define custom dimensions, track events, set up goals, and create custom reports to gain insights tailored to their unique requirements.
Real-Time Analytics: Matomo provides real-time data on website traffic, allowing website administrators to monitor user activity as it happens. This is valuable for tracking marketing campaigns, events, or sudden traffic spikes.
Visitor Tracking: Matomo offers detailed information about visitors, including their geographical location, referral sources, device types, and more. It also tracks the paths visitors take through the website and their interactions with specific pages and elements.
E-commerce Analytics: For e-commerce websites, Matomo provides comprehensive e-commerce tracking capabilities, allowing businesses to monitor product views, cart additions, purchases, and revenue data.
Goal Tracking: Users can define and track specific goals, such as form submissions, downloads, or other important actions on the website. This helps in measuring the success of specific conversion actions.
Plugin Ecosystem: Matomo has an active community of developers who create plugins to extend its functionality like Joomla. These plugins can add new features, integrations with other software, and additional tracking capabilities.
Data Visualization: Matomo offers various data visualization tools, including charts, graphs, and dashboards, to help users interpret their analytics data more easily.
Security: Matomo prioritizes security and provides features like user authentication, data anonymization, and protection against common web threats to ensure the integrity and security of collected data.
Developer API: Matomo has a rich API which allows developers to embed widgets or the whole dashboard into other web sites. Make extra tracking calls which do not belong to a web HTML request.
In summary, Matomo is a versatile web analytics solution that prioritizes data privacy, customization, and control for website owners. Its open-source nature and commitment to data security make it a popular choice, particularly for organizations seeking a self-hosted, privacy-focused alternative to mainstream analytics platforms.
